Chimney Rock State Park sits at the mouth of the Hickory Nut Gorge in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The rock itself is a 535-million-year-old granite monadnock — a single isolated mass that juts 315 feet above the surrounding terrain and 2,280 feet above sea level. From the observation deck, you can see the full length of Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge, with Bearwallow Mountain and the Blue Ridge on every horizon.

What's Inside

Everything in the park is included with your ticket. There is no secondary admission charge once you're through the gate.

The Elevator goes from the visitor level to the summit in seconds. It's carved through the rock itself and fully accessible. Most visitors take the elevator up and use the staircase on the way back down — or vice versa. Both directions work.

Chimney Rock Itself — the summit — has a large observation deck ringed by the gorge on all sides. On a clear day you can see 75 miles in every direction. The rock top is reachable from the elevator level via a short staircase (about 44 steps from the elevator landing).

Hickory Nut Falls drops 404 feet — one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern United States. The trail is a 1.5-mile round trip, moderate, and one of the best hikes in the Blue Ridge. The falls close at 6:00 PM during main season; plan to start the hike by 4:30 PM to be safe.

Skyline Trail runs the ridgeline above the gorge with views in both directions. It's more strenuous than the Falls trail and closes at 5:00 PM — 30 minutes before the entry deadline. If Skyline is your reason for coming, your real cutoff is closer to 4:30 PM.

Sky Lounge at the summit level has food, drinks, and a gift shop. Dogs and outside food are not permitted inside. Annual passholders get 15% off.

Getting Here

The park is at the end of US-64/74A in Chimney Rock, NC — about 3.2 miles west of Lake Lure town center and 25 miles east of Hendersonville. The road through the gorge is a two-lane mountain road; check drivenc.gov before a winter trip or after heavy rain.

Road note: US 64/74A between Bat Cave and Chimney Rock is under permanent reconstruction through 2029. Expect intermittent construction delays on that stretch.

Can you see Chimney Rock without hiking?

Yes. The elevator is included with your ticket and takes you directly to the summit level. You can see the Rock, the Sky Lounge, and the main overlook without hiking at all.

Is Chimney Rock dog-friendly?

Yes. Dogs are welcome on all trails on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Dogs other than service animals are not permitted in the elevator or the Sky Lounge.

Is there parking at Chimney Rock State Park?

Yes. The main lot sits at the base of the rock, a short walk from the ticket plaza. On peak fall weekends the lot fills before 10 AM — plan on the overflow area and a short shuttle, or arrive before 9 AM.
