Rumbling Bald is the real draw: a free-access, 1,100-acre section of Chimney Rock State Park with an estimated 1,500 bouldering problems, plus traditional and sport routes. It's a separate thing from Rumbling Bald Resort down the road — same mountain, same name, different operator, worth knowing before you show up at the wrong gate. Two smaller areas round out the options, and two guide services are worth booking if you've never climbed outdoors before.

A free-access, 1,100-acre section of Chimney Rock State Park with an estimated 1,500 bouldering problems plus trad and sport routes — one of the best-known bouldering destinations in the Southeast, and widely considered the most beginner-friendly major crag in western North Carolina.

Fall and winter are the popular season; the south-facing rock gets hot and overgrown with poison ivy in summer. Dedicated climbers’ parking lot on Boys Camp Rd; no camping at the lot or the crags.
A shorter, 0.4-mile trail to roughly 50+ boulder problems, big views, and a small seasonal waterfall — a Carolina Climbers Coalition access area on a trail easement through village land.

A newer, still-developing bouldering area with potential for 200+ problems plus 20-30 roped routes, reached via the Upper Boulders Trail (about 1.4 miles, moderately strenuous).

About the Chimney Rock Closure
If you were hoping to climb the actual Chimney Rock formation inside the ticketed park, that program is on hold for now. The park's own site is direct about it and points climbers to Rumbling Bald instead — which, given Rumbling Bald's size and reputation, isn't much of a downgrade.

- No — easy to mix up, since they share a name and a mountain. Rumbling Bald Resort is the golf and lodging resort in Lake Lure. Rumbling Bald the climbing area is a separate, free-access section of Chimney Rock State Park, managed by NC State Parks — not resort property.
- Can I still climb Chimney Rock itself?
- Not right now. Guided climbing on the actual Chimney Rock monolith, inside the ticketed park, is currently on hold — the park's own site directs climbers to Rumbling Bald instead. When it resumes, it runs through Fox Mountain Guides.
- Do I need a permit to climb at Rumbling Bald?
