Current conditions for Chimney Rock State Park, Lake Lure, and the Flowering Bridge — reviewed August 2026

Three sources that visitors commonly consult currently give conflicting information about this area's status. This page uses only primary sources — the park's own site, the Town of Lake Lure, and the organizations operating each attraction. Verified dates are shown for every item.

Chimney Rock State Park

The park reopened late June 2025, nine months after Hurricane Helene. All four main trails are open: Outcroppings, Exclamation Point, Skyline (1.1 miles past Exclamation Point, closes 5:00 PM), and Hickory Nut Falls (closes 6:00 PM).

Reservations: Two Official Sources, Different Answers

chimneyrockpark.com says reservations are "recommended for busy weekends and holidays." ncparks.gov says "timed-entry reservations are required." Both pages are official sources for the same park, and they say different things.

The practical answer: book ahead for Memorial Day weekend, July 4th, Labor Day weekend, all July weekends, and October foliage weekends. It costs nothing to arrive with a reservation you do not need, and you will not be turned away for missing your window — the park accepts walk-ups when the gate is open. Annual passholders never need reservations.

Lake Lure

Washburn Marina

The Town-owned marina reopened July 2026, 22 months after Helene. Day slips are open. The Floating Boardwalk has reopened. Additional improvements are still underway.

Fuel: The fuel tank is set, lines are installed, and the pump is near completion. Fueling is anticipated to begin August 2026 but had not started as of this review. Do not plan around fuel availability at Washburn Marina without confirming first.

Dock access: Hot docks on the left side of the marina (facing the lake), via the pathway to the Lake Lure Gazebo, offer temporary loading and unloading only. Docks on the right of that path are reserved for Lake Lure Tours. The playground is on the left.

Swimming is NOT permitted from any Town-owned property, including Washburn Marina Bay and Pool Creek Picnic Park.

Lake Lure Beach

The beach does not close on August 11 — it switches to weekends-only starting August 12. The season ends after Labor Day, September 7, 2026. (The Town's page shows "9/27/26" in one location, which is a typo. The confirmed close date is Labor Day.)

Admission: Adults $12 · Seniors $9 · Children ages 4–12 $8 — ages 4–12, must be 45 in or taller · Under 4 free with an adult.

Aqua Park: New inflatable adventure course — not included with beach admission. 50-minute sessions starting at 11:00 AM. Ages 7+ $10 per 50-minute session · Ages 4–6 $5 per 50-minute session.

Water quality: NC DEQ publishes live swim-water test results for the Lake Lure beach via the Western North Carolina Recreational Monitoring Program. After 20 months of storm debris in the watershed, current test results are the honest answer to whether the water is safe.

Flowering Bridge

The gardens at 3070 Memorial Hwy are open — free, accessible at any hour, year-round. New features include the "All Twisted Up" garden near the west-end kiosk and a new Education Center. Both the east and west banks of the Rocky Broad River are accessible.

The bridge structure is gone. Hurricane Helene washed away roughly 150 feet of riverbed on the west end; the bridge was declared unsafe and demolition began August 18, 2025. Decorative elements were salvaged and reused in the new gardens.

Replacement bridge: A pedestrian connector is under discussion. A FEMA Section 406 grant went to the Town of Lake Lure for infrastructure repair. The Flowering Bridge organization says "options are being explored" for a pedestrian connection. The Town's July 2026 news summary does not mention a replacement bridge. This is not a committed project — it has no confirmed funding, schedule, or decision.

Parking is very limited: a few spaces near the Education Center on the west end, plus along Boys Camp Road. Note: Boys Camp Road Bridge is under construction from the week of July 27, 2026 — the temporary bridge remains in use throughout, so the road stays passable.

The gardens are run by an all-volunteer 501(c)(3). Dogs welcome on a leash. Portable restroom on site.

Recovered Rainbow Bridge Collars

The Rainbow Bridge — where thousands of people had attached memorial collars for pets that had died — was washed away by Hurricane Helene in September 2024.

Some collars were recovered after the storm, cleaned, and stored by artist Amy Wald. The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge organization maintains a full list with photos of every recovered collar on their website. If you left a collar at the Rainbow Bridge, that is where to look.

A new Rainbow Bridge is planned. The organization's FAQ gives some timing — check their page directly rather than any date in third-party coverage, as details are still being finalized. There is no temporary Rainbow Bridge. The organization is not affiliated with similar projects elsewhere.

Active Construction

None of the construction below blocks access to the main attractions, but it explains the parking constraints and some travel delays.

Roads

Check drivenc.gov for live road conditions before a winter trip or after heavy rain — the gorge roads are mountain roads and conditions change.

Chimney Rock Village

Roughly a dozen businesses are currently open, including RiverWatch Coffeehouse & Giftshop. A number of businesses destroyed by Helene have not reopened.

Parking: The main street fills quickly — ongoing road and building construction reduces availability. Beyond Main Street, there is a public lot next to Chimney Rock Smokehouse. Village contact: 828-625-4456.

Green Salamander Art Trail — 33 sculptures on display through August 31, 2026, then auctioned at the End-of-Season Celebration benefiting the Hickory Nut Chamber of Commerce.

Lake Lure Centennial — a celebration on the water is planned for September 2026.

What's Changed Recently

August 2026 — Washburn Marina open. Lake Lure Beach on full daily summer schedule. Lake Boulevard roadwork active through August 7. Boys Camp Road Bridge construction underway.

July 2026 — Washburn Marina reopened (22 months after Helene). Lake Lure Beach aqua park launched.

May 2026 — Lake Lure officially reopened for swimming and boating, May 15. US 64/74A fully open to all traffic (late March).

June 2025 — Chimney Rock State Park reopened after nine-month closure.

What's Easy to Get Wrong

The Flowering Bridge is not closed. The gardens at 3070 Memorial Hwy are open, free, and accessible 24 hours. The bridge structure is gone — not temporarily closed, demolished. The gardens have new features and are worth visiting. What you will not get is the bridge photo. Most coverage treats this as binary (open/closed) and it isn't.

Lake Lure Tours departs from the beach, not the marina. Maps and the marina address will send you to Washburn Marina. Tours leave from Lake Lure Beach. Check in there.

Reservations at Chimney Rock. Two official sources say different things. Book ahead for fall weekends and holidays regardless — it resolves the ambiguity cheaply.
