Visiting After Helene: What Reopened, What Didn't, and What to Double-Check

Hurricane Helene hit this corner of North Carolina in late September 2024, and the area came back in pieces rather than all at once. Many pages still describe an earlier version of what's open. This is the short version of what we've verified, with the dates attached.

Everything below was confirmed from the source named; we have not re-checked it today, so confirm anything you're building a trip around.

What Has Reopened

  • Chimney Rock State Park. Reopened: Late June 2025 — nine months after Hurricane Helene. Elevator status at our last check: Operational — included with all tickets.
  • Lake Lure. Officially reopened May 15, 2026, after a 20-month closure following Hurricane Helene.
  • US 64. Open to all traffic since late March 2026.
  • Washburn Marina. Reopened July 2026, 22 months after Helene. Fuel service: Not yet operating — anticipated August 2026, not confirmed (as of early August 2026), so call before counting on it.

What's Still Closed or Unresolved

  • Eagle Rock Access (Buffalo Creek Park). The state lists it as Closed until further notice. It's a separate, free-access area, so its closure doesn't affect the ticketed park.
  • The Flowering Bridge. The bridge itself was Demolished — demolition began August 18, 2025. The surrounding gardens are a different story, and we cover them in our Flowering Bridge gardens tip.
  • Guided climbing on the Chimney Rock monolith. It was on hold when we last checked; the free Rumbling Bald climbing area is the open alternative.

What's Still Under Construction

Rebuilding is ongoing. Our reporting lists US 64/74A permanent reconstruction between Bat Cave and Chimney Rock continues through 2029 — expect intermittent construction delays, and the Town has a replacement-dam project in design, described as FEMA-approved detailed design phase — $3.5M total, 35% Town match, construction expected late summer 2026.
