The Short Drive Between Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Has a Catch

On a map, Lake Lure and Chimney Rock look like a single stop. The drive is 3.2 miles and usually ~7 minutes via US-64 W / US-74A W. That's short enough that most people stop thinking about it.

The catch is the road itself.

What Is Going On With US 64/74A

Local news reports describe the work this way: US 64/74A permanent reconstruction between Bat Cave and Chimney Rock continues through 2029 — expect intermittent construction delays. A short drive is also a drive with very little slack in it. Any lane closure can turn a quick hop into a wait.

The road reopened to all traffic after the storm: Open to all traffic since late March 2026. That's good news, but "open" and "free of delays" are different things.

Where This Bites You

The place where this actually costs people is the Chimney Rock entry deadline. Entry closes at 5:30 PM in main season, and the late-afternoon visit we recommend in our best-time guide depends on arriving near the end of the day. That's exactly when a construction delay turns a plan into a missed gate.

Two habits solve most of it:

  • Leave Lake Lure earlier than the map says you need to. Treat the posted drive time as the best case, not the typical case, when you're aiming at a deadline.
  • Check DriveNC or the Town's updates before you go. Conditions on a construction corridor can change from one day to the next.
