Free Ways to Get Outside Around Lake Lure and Chimney Rock

Chimney Rock State Park is the headline attraction, and it charges for entry. If you want to see the area without paying a ticket, or to fill the rest of a trip, you have more options than most visitors realize.

Free to Visit

The Flowering Bridge gardens. Open free, 24 hours a day, year-round. The bridge itself is gone, but the gardens aren't. See our full tip.

Short walks in town. The Rutherford Outdoor Coalition lists a Lake Lure Town Center walkway, trails at Morse Park, and a riverwalk along the Rocky Broad, all short and rated easy. Our trails directory lists them with distances.

The Chimney Rock Village boulders. A short trail on Round Top Mountain leads to a set of boulder problems, big views, and a small seasonal waterfall. It's a Carolina Climbers Coalition access area on a trail easement through village land. Parking is at the public lot next to Burntshirt Vineyards or on Main Street.

Rumbling Bald, the climbing area. Free to climb, with a permit to fill out at the kiosk. See our first-timer tip, and don't confuse it with the resort.

The One That's Closed

The state's current listing for Eagle Rock Access, the separate free-access area at Buffalo Creek Park, reads: Closed until further notice. Older guides still list it as an option, so don't plan around it without checking. That closure doesn't affect the ticketed park.

A Note on Conditions

Hurricane Helene reshaped a lot of the terrain in this area. A trail listing that's a few years old may describe a route that's changed, so confirm current conditions with the managing organization before you rely on one.
