Two Rumbling Balds: One Is a Private Resort, One Is a Free Climbing Area

Search for "Rumbling Bald" and you'll find two very different places under one name. It's an easy mistake to make.

Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure: The Resort

A private resort community of roughly 3,000 acres on the lake, with homes, golf, a spa, restaurants, and a marina. It has a a 125-slip member marina plus an 8-slip commercial marina, and it's governed by a property owners' association.

Per the resort's own FAQ and our full Rumbling Bald guide, the public can use:

  • The restaurants
  • Both golf courses (members and lodging guests get priority on tee times)
  • The spa and salon

And these are reserved for owners, members, and lodging guests:

  • The Wellness Center and its pools
  • The private beach
  • Mini-golf and the game courts
  • The member marina

Rumbling Bald at Chimney Rock State Park: The Climbing Area

A free-access section of the state park, with an estimated 1,500 bouldering problems plus trad and sport routes. It is managed by NC State Parks, not the resort, and it has its own parking on Boys Camp Road with a permit kiosk. Our rock climbing guide covers it, and our first-timer tip is the place to start if you've never climbed outdoors.

It is also separate from the ticketed part of Chimney Rock State Park, so a park ticket isn't what gets you in.

Why the Mix-Up Matters

The resort is a private community, so it isn't the place to show up with climbing gear and expect to find the boulders. And if you're hoping for a spa day or a tee time, the lot on Boys Camp Road is the climbers' lot, not the resort. Neither mistake is a disaster, but both cost you time you didn't plan to spend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rumbling Bald the resort the same as Rumbling Bald the climbing area?
No. The resort is a private community on Lake Lure with golf, a spa, a marina, and homes. The climbing area is a separate free-access section of Chimney Rock State Park managed by NC State Parks. They share a name and a mountain, not an owner.
Can I use Rumbling Bald's amenities without staying there?
Some of them. The restaurants, golf courses, and spa and salon take the public. The Wellness Center, private beach, mini-golf, and member marina are reserved for owners, members, and lodging guests.
