Apple Picking on the Way to Lake Lure: Five Orchards Along Chimney Rock Road

There are no orchards in Lake Lure itself, but there's a row of them on the way in. If you're driving from Hendersonville on US 64, Chimney Rock Road, you pass five of them before you reach the gorge, which makes apple season a stop on the way rather than a separate trip.

Our apple orchard directory lists every orchard we track with contact details. This is the shorter guide to telling the five on the road apart.

The Five on Chimney Rock Road

Coston Farm and Apple House. About 20 varieties, u-pick, and a bakery known for pies, cider, and apple butter, plus a covered picnic and play area.

Grandad's Apples N' Such. A 120-acre, four-generation family farm with 30-plus varieties and u-pick, plus hayrides, a corn maze, and a country store.

Mountain Fresh Orchards. The odd one out: it's we-pick, where staff pick for you, rather than u-pick. It has the "Apple Express" train ride and a market and bakery known for cider donuts.

Owenby's Apple House & Orchard. A family-owned farm of more than 60 years with about 18 varieties, u-pick, nature trails, and a store with produce and homemade jams.

Twisted Apple Orchard & Cider Mill. An organic orchard with u-pick, house-pressed cider, hayrides, and a farm store. It opens Labor Day weekend.

Picking Between Them

  • If the goal is to pick your own apples, four of the five are u-pick. Mountain Fresh is the one that isn't.
  • If you have kids, the farms with rides, hayrides, and play areas are worth the stop, and we list each one's extras in the directory.
  • If you want cider and baked goods and don't care about picking, most of the five have a bakery or cider on site, and Mountain Fresh, where staff do the picking, suits that plan well.

Before You Go

Dates and hours change, and we last verified the orchard listings in late August 2026, so treat the details above as a starting point rather than a promise. Our directory has phone numbers for each farm.
